Douglas is a residential area located on the northeast coast of Douglas Island in southeastern Alaska. It's the only residential community on the island and has a population of approximately 3,000 residents. The population of the entire island is about 5,000. The community of Douglas is home to the only traditional school that serves the elementary aged children on the island. The community also has a public library, a few restaurants and bars and post office. Douglas Island is 17 miles long, 8 miles at its widest point and has 42 miles of shoreline. The island was discovered by George Vancouver in 1793 and named for John Douglas, who was then the Earl of Salisbury. Gold was discovered on the island in 1881 by French Pete Erussard who later sold his claims to John Treadwell for $400. The Treadwell Mine went on to produce over sixty-two million dollars in gold until the mine caved in and was flooded on April 22, 1917. In 1910 Douglas was the largest city in southeast Alaska and the Treadwell Mine was one of the largest mines in the world. Douglas lies within the city and borough of the city of Juneau. A federally recognized tribe is located in the community called the Douglas Indian Association.

Douglas Weather & Climate

The Southeastern Panhandle Region of Alaska has a humid continental climate, although it borders on being a subarctic climate. The moderating influence comes from the proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Winters are long and moist - cold, but not frigid. January highs are frequently above freezing. Spring, summer and autumn are cool to mild. Snowfall averages 84 inches and occurs mainly from November through March. Yearly rainfall varies, depending on location, but averages between 55 to 90 inches. Spring is the driest season and September and October are the wettest months. Some have described this region as "a cooler version of Seattle."
