Lake-Louise is a tiny settlement of 46 residents, and also the name of a lake located 150 miles north of Anchorage in southeast Alaska. The lake is about 17 miles off the Glenn Highway. Towards the end of World War II, the U.S. Army built a recreation facility at the lake and also constructed the first road in the area. There are still several dilapidated cabins from the era at the campground, including one that was used for four days by General Dwight D. Eisenhower before he was president. The Lake Louise State Recreation Area offers hiking trails, picnic areas, a boat launch and a large campground. Summer activities include fishing, boating, sailing, swimming, hiking and wildlife viewing. In the autumn, the Nelchina caribou herd passes through this area, providing a spectacular sight if you're lucky enough to catch of them. Species of fish in the lake include lake trout, rainbow trout, grayling and burbot. Wintertime activities at Lake Louise include dog sled racing, snow moiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hunting and ice fishing. Photographic opportunities abound year-round.

Lake Louise Weather & Climate

Southeastern Alaska, on the mainland (but not the panhandle region) has a climate greatly influenced by the Northern Pacific Ocean. The classification of the climate is subarctic due to the short, cool summers. Temperatures are mild compared to other parts of the state. The lack of extreme cold or hot temperatures speaks of the maritime influence. While it does not get nearly as much rain as the southeast panhandle of Alaska, it does get more snow, although there tend to be more clear days here. There are frequent, strong southeast winds known as the Knik wind, especially in the winter months.
