Seldovia is located on the Kenai Peninsula on the south-central coast of Alaska. The population was 286 in the 2000 census. There are no roads connecting Seldovia to other towns of Alaska, so one must reach it via aircraft or boat. The town that is now Seldovia was settled by hardy, individualistic homesteaders in the early part of the 20th century. They had a "living-with-the-land lifestyle" that is still felt in the community today. The beautiful landscape and sea have also shaped the artistic nature of the people who increasingly turned to their production of arts and crafts for the growing number of tourists visiting their town. Other attractions to Seldovia include the excellent sports fishing opportunities and outdoor recreation. Charter boats keep busy bringing sport fishermen to Kachemak Bay and other nearby waters. The native residents of the town are mixed Denaina Indian and Suspiaq Eskimo (Alitiiq). The towns original Russian name, Seldevoy, means Herring Bay, as there was once a significant herring population in the surrounding waters. Unfortunately, due to over-fishing in the early 20th century that's no longer the case.

Seldovia Weather & Climate

South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate classification, with strong oceanic influences. This part of Alaska gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast Panhandle region. Summers are short and cool to mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, in this area, especially in the wintertime. Rains are frequent in late summer, but not abundant in amount. The number of frost-free summer days number 101. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent.
