Clam-Gulch is a small town located in Kenai Peninsula Borough in south-central Alaska. The population is approximately 175 residents. This is the place to come in Alaska for clamming. The village of Clam Gulch is well-known for the hundreds of thousands of razor clams harvested here annually. It's one of the finest places in the world for clamming. Situated on bluffs overlooking scenic Cook Inlet, the State Recreation Area is home to a campground and has access to the clamming beaches. The bluffs in the state park also offer fantastic views of the Aleutian Mountains' three tallest peaks; Mount Iliamna, Mount Redoubt and Mount Spurr. There are eight known major concentrations of Razor Clams on the Pacific Coast, and four of them are in Alaska. The beaches of Clam Gulch are one of the four. Clams may be dug during any low tide, but a tide of minus two feet or lower is recommended for best results. State law requires that all clams dug be kept, regardless of size and condition. Anyone 16 years of age, or older, must have a valid Alaska sport-fishing license to dig clams. Contact the Department of Fish and Game for the daily limit of clams per person. In winter, Clam Gulch is also the site of many poker-runs by snow-machine enthusiasts. Also, on occasion, Clam Gulch is the halfway point for the Tustumena 200 Sled Dog Race. For accommodations, are 3 lodges located in Clam Gulch.

Clam Gulch Weather & Climate

South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate, with strong oceanic influences. This part of Alaska gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast Panhandle region. Summers are short and cool to mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, in this area, especially in the winter. Rains are frequent in late summer, but not abundant. The number of frost-free summer days number 101. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent.
