Sterling is a city on the Kenai Peninsula in southern Alaska. The population is approximately 4,700 residents. The town of Sterling is mainly supported by tourism, sport fishing and hunting. A prehistoric archaeological site, containing Dena'ina house pits, has been discovered near the town of Sterling. The region of the Kenai Peninsula Borough that is now Sterling was opened to homesteaders in 1947. It's located about 29 miles east of the town of Kenai and two-and-a-half hours from Anchorage. Visitors to Sterling can book guided fishing excursions or hunting trips. There are cabins in the area available for rent, some of them within walking distance of the Kenai River. Camping is also popular, at the Isaac Walton State Campground, which sits right at the junction of the Moose and Kenai Rivers. The campground offers tables, a boat ramp and toilet facilities. There are also extensive canoe trail systems in the area for those wishing to explore the waterways. Other accommodations and activities are available in nearby Kenai or Soldotna, including plenty of shopping and restaurant options, hotels and bed and breakfasts.
