Kenai-Peninsula is a large peninsula that extends off the southern coast of Alaska. It's located within Kenai Peninsula Borough, which has a total population of 55,400 (as of 2010.) The 3 largest communities on Kenai Peninsula are Homer, Kenai and Soldotna. Kenai Peninsula extends about 150 miles southwest from the Chugach Mountains, south of Anchorage. It's separated from the mainland on the west by Cook Inlet and on the east by Prince William Sound. The stunning glacier-covered Kenai Mountains run along the southeast edge of the peninsula along the coast of the Gulf of Alaska. The peninsula is home to Kenai Fjords National Park and Kachemak Bay State Park. Many lakes dot the interior of the peninsula, and rivers include Kenai River, which is known worldwide for its salmon population. Kenai Peninsula also has many glaciers in its eastern and southern areas. Kenai Fjords National Park is home to a spectacular array of wildlife, including sea otters, puffins, sea lions, kittiwakes, humpback and orca whales, harbor seals, and more. One of the most awe-inspiring sights on Kenai Peninsula are the four active volcanoes that can be viewed right from the highway. Other activities on the peninsula include hiking, backpacking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, tide-pooling, camping, dog-sledding, flight-seeing, and golf.

Kenai Peninsula Weather & Climate

South-central Alaska's Kenai Peninsula is a piece of land that juts out from the southern coast of the state into the Gulf of Alaska. The peninsula has a coastal climate that is relatively mild, by Alaska's standards. The climate is heavily influenced by the Northern Pacific Ocean. The annual precipitation is very high in relation to other parts of the state, and the lack of extreme cold or hot temperatures speak of the maritime influence. The Kenai Peninsula is one of the few areas in Alaska that allows for agriculture, with a growing season long enough for producing hay and several other crops.
