Seward is located on the Kenai Peninsula that extends off the mainland of south-central Alaska. The population is approximately 3,000. To the south of the peninsula is the Gulf of Alaska, the Cook Inlet is on the west and Prince William Sound on the east. The town of Seward was named for William H. Seward, the U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, who was pivotal in the purchase of Alaska from Russia. Mile 0 of the historic Iditarod Trail is located in Seward. According to a 2011 National Marine Fisheries Service report, Seward is "the ninth most lucrative fisheries port in the United States based on the monetary value of fish taken from the port." The other major industry in Seward is tourism. Seward, as well as the entire Kenai Peninsula, has stunning scenery and exceptional outdoor activities. Known as an ecotourism and adventure capital of the world, Seward offers guided tours of the glaciers and bay, fishing, kayaking, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, and more. The Homer Spit, on Kenai Peninsula, is the second longest in the world and was recently named as one of the Best 100 Beaches in the United States. Nearby towns include Homer, Kenai and Seldovia.

Seward Weather & Climate

South-central Alaska has a subarctic climate, with strong oceanic influences. This part of the state gets less rain, but more snow, than the southeast Panhandle region. Summers are short and mild, and winters are long and cold. There are frequent, strong southeast winds, known as the Knik wind, especially in the winter. Rains are frequent in late summer, but not abundant in total amounts. The number of frost-free summer days number 101. The latitude in this region causes summer days to be very long and winter days to be very short. It is also generally very cloudy during winter. Due to the proximity to active volcanoes, ash hazards may occur and are significant, but not frequent.
